Growing Your Opted-In Audience

Marketing and Growth

Your opted-in customers, the ones who've agreed to hear from you by push, SMS, or email, are your most valuable marketing asset. They're the people you can actually reach, for free, whenever you have something worth sharing. The bigger and healthier that list, the more every campaign is worth. Here's how to grow it.

Why Opt-Ins Matter

You can only message customers who've opted in. A customer who downloaded your app but never enabled notifications can't be reached by push, and a customer who never shared their number can't get a text. Growing your opted-in base is the single biggest lever on how far your campaigns reach.

Grow Your Push Opt-Ins

  • Let the app do the asking. Your app prompts customers to turn on notifications, and keeps prompting on each open until they opt in. Many customers say yes once they understand there are deals waiting.
  • Ask in store. Train budtenders to mention the app and notifications at checkout: "Turn on notifications and you'll get our drops and deals first."
  • Make the value obvious. Customers opt in when there's a clear payoff. Promote that app notifications mean early access to drops, members-only deals, and restock alerts.

Grow Your SMS and Email Lists

  • Collect at the point of sale. Ask for a phone number or email at checkout, with the customer's consent to receive marketing.
  • Collect online. Offer sign-up on your site and app.
  • Tie it to loyalty. If you run a loyalty or rewards program, enrollment is a natural moment to capture opt-ins.

Always get clear consent before adding someone to an SMS or email list, and always honor opt-outs. See Cannabis Marketing Compliance Basics.

Make It Worth Staying Subscribed

Growing the list is half the job. Keeping people on it is the other half.

  • Reward opt-ins. Give your subscribers something non-subscribers don't get: first dibs on drops, exclusive bundles, early specials.
  • Stay relevant. Use audiences to send the right message to the right people instead of blasting everyone. See Creating a Custom Audience and Audience Recipes That Drive Engagement.
  • Don't over-message. The fastest way to shrink a list is to flood it. Message with purpose, and people stay.
