ADA Accesibility Checklist

Make Your Dispensary Accessible to Everyone

ADA Accessibility Checklist

Accessibility isn’t optional — it’s essential.  This checklist helps dispensaries and cannabis tech teams ensure their websites and apps meet ADA and WCAG 2.2 standards for usability and inclusivity.  Use it as a quick audit or a reference when designing new digital experiences.

✅ General Accessibility Principles

  • Provide equal access for all users, regardless of ability.
  • Follow WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards for design and functionality.
  • Test your site with real users and assistive technologies (screen readers, keyboard-only navigation).
  • Publish an accessibility statement on your website explaining your commitment and contact method for support.

✅ Perceivable Content

  • All images include descriptive alt text that conveys meaning.
  • Videos include captions or transcripts.
  • Text can be resized up to 200% without breaking layout.
  • Color is not used as the only way to convey information.
  • Ensure a 4.5:1 contrast ratio for text and background colors.
  • Provide clear labels and instructions for all input fields.

✅ Operable Interface

  • All functionality is accessible via keyboard navigation.
  • Links and buttons have clear, visible focus states.
  • Avoid flashing content that could trigger seizures or motion sensitivity.
  • Allow users to pause, stop or hide any automatically updating content.
  • Menus and modals can be opened and closed without a mouse.
  • Include a “Skip to Content” link at the top of pages.

✅ Understandable Design

  • Navigation is consistent across pages.
  • Form errors are described clearly in text, not just color.
  • Labels and instructions appear before input fields.
  • Provide clear feedback when actions are completed (form submission, order confirmation).
  • Use readable fonts and maintain clear hierarchy in headings (H1, H2, H3).

✅ Robust Implementation

  • Use proper semantic HTML elements (buttons, links, headings).
  • Apply ARIA labels and roles for assistive technology interpretation.
  • Test site compatibility with screen readers (NVDA, VoiceOver, JAWS).
  • Validate code using W3C accessibility validator tools.
  • Ensure all interactive elements are properly tagged and described.

✅ Mobile Accessibility

  • Design responsive layouts that work across screen sizes.
  • Touch targets are at least 44×44 pixels for easy interaction.
  • Avoid requiring gestures that can’t be replicated via keyboard or tap.
  • Use consistent navigation and heading structure across web and mobile views.

✅ Cannabis-Specific Accessibility Tips

  • Age gates are keyboard and screen-reader accessible.
  • Product menus can be navigated without scrolling fatigue.
  • Forms for medical verification include proper field labeling.
  • Disclaimers and policy text are legible and resize properly on all devices.

Final Step: Publish an Accessibility Statement

Every compliant site should include a short statement outlining your commitment to accessibility, the standards followed (WCAG 2.2 AA) and how users can request accommodations or report issues.
